House of Music - Aalborg

The city of Aalborg has decided to build a music hall for the city. Realdania is funding the building of a new ambitious music hall in the northern part of Jutland. Austrian architecture firm COOP Himmelb(l)au has designed the innovative construction.

The aim is to create a beautiful and spectacular complex on the city’s harbour front providing education and research facilities for musical institutions. Among these institutions is the Aalborg Symphony Orchestra, which will now have a new concert hall.

Furthermore, a large part of the building will function as a permanent research and education facility for the Music Conservatory of Northern Jutland, Aalborg Symphony Orchestra, Institute of Music and Musical Therapy at Aalborg University as well as architecture and design training.

The building has a total area of 20,000 sqm. It is five storeys high and has 3 basement storeys. The project is expected to be finished by mid-2013 and will cost €90 million in total.

The house is founded on driven, pre-cast concrete piles. The pile length varies from 16 to 26 m and they are all in the dimension of 300x300 mm. A total of approx. 40,000 m of piles are planned to be installed for the building. Most piles are installed from the lowest base level – approx. 10 m below ground surface.

The piling is to be done by the Danish company Arkil Fundering A/S, who is a company under the Arkil Holding A/S. The piles are to be installed with 2 Junttan piling rigs; PM20LC with a HHK5A hammer and PM25LC with a HHK7A hammer.
